Gary Rhodes restaurant, W1
I had resisted going here despite friend’s recommendation because…oh, I have never been keen on Gary Rhodes public persona, Kelly Hoppen did the interior and I cannot bear her, the restaurant has no windows and I thought it would be miserable.
I was so wrong. We had an extraordinarily good lunch. The space was intimate not poky, décor warm and understated, lots of space, really friendly staff and great food. Level access from the street. Parking the usual central London nightmare – we used a close by NCP rather than get clamped! The experience was so good we have agreed to a return, evening, visit with our rather smug buddies…
The Bingham, Richmond
We went here last year for EazyD’s birthday and, this year, we returned. Good news – it was still good. The same river views, reasonable prices, more fab friends. Bliss
The chef is still Shay Cooper and the food looked and tasted wonderful. So many best bits - a wonderful fishy starter with scallops, brill, chanterelle mushroom, pea mousse; sea trout and foie gras for main – so yummy; a raspberry shortbread, sorbet and champagney custard with strawberries...so delicious. Memo to self: go back quicker next time.
Texture
Aagh moment? Texture has no wheelchair access because there are four steps up to get into it. They said, ‘we can 'get some blokes to carry you up the steps'! Darlings, I don't think so. I wheel or I don't go. Perhaps you could consider getting a … ramp?!
PS the commis chef boyfriend of a carer’s sister has looked into this – I was trying to book on their recommendation – and he says they do have a ramp and to try again. I am still irritated though…if they do have a ramp, why did they not know it? However, I have no principles when it comes to good food so, watch this space…
