Tom Aikens
Oh dear, am weeping over keyboard, my bestest has left me. The mad woman has gone back to live in New Zealand…who’d wanna do that? Please don’t bother to reply!
She picked Tom Aikens as her favourite restaurant for the farewell meal. You may be aware that I, too, used to love Tom Aikens but, honey’s, bad stuff happens and, for a whole series of reasons, me and EazyD hadn’t been for a while. I heard he had been bought out but was still the name and in the kitchen. Umm, worrying, but if that’s what wants, we are there. How was it?
Well, good and bad. The bad was not overwhelmingly bad – the butter with the bread was, er, rancid; lots of the theatrical flourish had been abandoned which we, me and , found sad because we love all the spectacular extras; and it was still pretty expensive.
On the positive side, they have re-jigged the entrance so, no more step but a small slope up; the space inside is much as it was and remains very comfortable; and the food was…almost…as good as before. A langoustine and risotto starter was one of the best things any of us had ever eaten and my desert of popcorn and caramel ice-cream was truly divine…frankly, everyone else ate just too damn much of it! The staff were as charming as ever and EazyD even managed to draw the man himself out of the kitchens to engage in a discussion on kitchen knives – does Tom Aikens not look remarkably like Ugly Betty’s boss, Daniel Meade (the TV series!)?
What this experience of Tom Aikens did not do was blow us away…and that was disappointing. I guess they are having to cut their cloth in a recessionary 'stylee' just like everyone else but how truly sad if there is no demand for the frivolously spectacular foodie offer in London…maybe I just need to look for that elsewhere now or settle for the enjoyment of good company & great food in a nice location.
Sob, and now she is gone. Are there any good restaurants in New Zealand?
