Just got an email from The Riverside Studios that Mies Julie ends this weekend. The Riverside says: Following a sell-out run and sensational reviews, the multi-award winning big buzz hit of this year's Edinburgh Festival (Time Out) comes to London for a strictly limited season from 7 March 2013. In the smouldering kitchen of a remote South African farmhouse eighteen years after the end of apartheid, a single night of brutality and tenderness unfolds between a black farm labourer and his white master's daughter. The visceral struggles of contemporary South Africa are laid bare as John and Julie battle one night over power, sexuality, memory, mothers and land. As the couple's deadly attraction spirals out of control, they grapple with the possibilities of freedom and restitution, and face the reality of what cannot ever be recovered. This explosive new adaptation of Strindberg's classic Miss Julie, from the internationally acclaimed director Yael Farber, is both intimate and epic. Featuring an exhilarating live soundscape and thrilling performances, Mies Julie is the smash-hit that has been wowing audiences (Daily Telegraph). I went across to see the play at Easter, weeks ago now, really enjoyed it and meant to write recommending it. I thought the play itself had some structural and analogical weaknesses but the two lead actors give truly exciting, viscerally physical, performances and are so worth seeing. Do go if you are able - it’s on until 19 May only. Note: The Riverside is pretty good for wheelchair access if you haven’t been before and you should be able to find parking on the streets close by. Some of the pavements around are a bit broken and slope-y, the doors aren’t automated and it always seems to be incredibly busy which makes wheeling a frustrating experience but it is on the level inside and the wheelchair positions are at the front, to the side, with excellent views and access. Busy is clearly good for them and, as ever, I never fail to marvel at everything The Riverside is that, for some inexplicable (to me) reasons, The Watermans Arts Centre in Brentford is not. The Watermans should just be … better, no? |
