Unable to believe how long it had been – given how much we enjoy it - EaZyD and me spent a couple of pleasurable, leisurely, Sunday evenings at two restaurants new to us: Galvin La Chapelle, in East London, and The Ledbury, in Notting Hill. |

Galvin La Chapelle, accessible through the Café next door, is in an old chapel/converted school – a nice space and we managed to park right outside, always a result! We liked that it was very quiet - probably not too good for business – but, consequently, the staff were possibly a touch over-attentive if reasonably charming with it. The food was better than good without being outstanding – a delicious blueberry soufflé and a yummily scrumptious monkfish tail were the highlights. The best bit was the bill. Yay, it was cheaper than we expected! Always love that. Not cheap but we have paid a lot more for much worse in London restaurants – notably at Corrigans last year. Would definitely return here, perhaps for a family or friends gathering if we wanted decent food, nice place, not too formal and not prohibitively expensive. |

The Ledbury was an entirely different level of fantastic foodie experience – a real treat. From their rapid response to my email on access through to taking our booking, greeting, seating, eating and departing, this was a smoothly professional, totally enjoyable gastronomic delight. Located in an expensive residential neighbourhood, Sunday evening parking was not a problem – think it would be any other time though. Easy access up a sloped entrance and into a calmly sophisticated room, I was already anticipating good things. The food did not disappoint. With a menu that allowed experimentation, or not, good bread, delicious amuse-geules, highlights were EaZyD’s risotto of squid with cauliflower, sherry and pine nuts, my succulent John Dory with Pumpkin and Clementine puree and a dessert of Caramelised Banana Galette with Salted Caramel and Peanut Ice Cream. As we strolled back to the car on another horribly cold evening, we agreed it was right up there as truly excellent restaurant experiences go - cannot wait to revisit, maybe in the summer. If you are wondering, it was double the price of Galvins and worth it if you love food and like to treat yourself occasionally. |
