OUCH – the BBC hate me. OUCH is the name of the BBC disability site. I drop in and socialise on their boards now and then. Why do they hate me? Apparently because I have set up my cyberspace alter ego, StilettoWheels, as a website. By using this as my nickname on their message boards – I use eLleonstilettowheels, or sign off as elle at stilettowheels – I am promoting my website and this is verboten as per their House Rules. I do quite understand that the Beeb do not want people posting on their message boards to promote commercial goods and services but I do not really understand their problem with a non-commercial, non advertising, not for profit site representing a real life member of the OUCH community, like ME. Let’s face it, there are a number of people writing on the OUCH site, say for example Disability Bitch - honey, I love your posts, join me, why dontcha? Facebook is so over! - whose nicknames, like mine, contain the name, or part thereof, of a public blog; some are on Facebook and say so. Further to this, many such blogs have advertisements; sell books, t-shirts…cuddly toys and more! This is somehow OK by the Beeb? And yet… Buy yourself a bit of software, learn how to use it, design, write and finance your own fabulous looking site because you’re so sick of the rubbish looking imagery associated with disability, accept no advertising, sell nothing and the Beeb HATES you. And banishes you from its’ boards. Such a contrast to those nice people at Youreable who welcomed me in, saying post here and link your site in, we think you should get more traffic. I like inclusive. I like friendly. I think I will spend more time with people who like me rather than tiptoeing around, barefoot, at the Beeb. People, they stripped me of my stilettos…OUCH, that hurts! |
