Ya know, it’s been ten years since I got ill…wow! Often people suggest that there must be some good things to have come from this difficult period of my life. I appreciate that they would want to hope so, for me, and, for themselves.
Hmmm, struggling here ....more humility, less hubris, more empathy, awareness, patience...the odd sunny day at home, new friends not otherwise in my orbit...
The negatives? Much easier ...physical devastation, pain, financial problems, confinement, restrictions, friendships lost, ambitions laid aside, relationships strained to the absolute of breaking and I could go on.
But, this does not mean I am always unhappy...many of us live less than perfect lives and continue to cherish, perhaps even more so, memories, ongoing pleasures, new experiences. Here are a few of my favourite 'being alive' things ...
The exquisite soft shiny pleated silk of my favourite skirt. It has a sssssssssssoft sssssssslithery movement like a dancer on ice.....
Don Giovanni, the opera by Mozart, with music so magnificent it makes me cry every time I hear it...
The hour after a dinner party, when the lights are low, the empty glasses and bottles are strewn, the music is still playing, dirty dishes are in the kitchen, everyone has left and EaZyD and I are alone with the warm echo of our friends chatter and laughter as we sit and relax...
Great restaurants - so, a few to remember - Petrus, Tom Aikens, Le Manoir, exploding quails eggs at Le Gavroche, the charm of Café Bouloud (NY), Gordon Ramsey at Aubergine, Jean Georges (NY), Charlie Trotters (Chicago), Per Se (NY), Asiate (NY), Guy Savoy (Paris), La Tante Claire, Marco at Harveys, and, The Walpole – local, low key but great food and a warm welcome!
